New in Bananatag’s Email Designer, we’ve added a table of contents block to help structure your employee newsletter’s content.

The table of contents block is especially useful for very long email newsletters, or text-heavy emails. This new block is available in the latest version of the Email Designer:

How to use the table of contents block

The table of contents block can be dragged into any email inside of the Email Designer, and will be automatically generated based on the titles and headings used below it:

If you’ve used section title blocks or have enabled titles above article or dynamic content blocks these will automatically be included in your table of contents.

Note that if the placeholder text isn’t changed from the default ‘Section Title” or “Title”, the title will be ignored by the table of content.

There are options for a list-style (vertical) or menu-style (horizontal) table of contents:

Create a list-style (vertical) table of contents

The list-style table of contents is similar to the table of contents you might see in a Word processor or novel.

Create a menu-style (horizontal) table of contents

The menu-style or horizontal table of contents is similar to the top navigation menu on many websites, and works particularly well for newsletters where vertical space is important (so the top story is still visible without scrolling).

Customizing the table of contents block

Once the table of contents is generated, you can click inside the block and use the inline editing tools to customize its appearance:

Note that if you refresh the contents of the table of contents, your inline styling will be reset as well. It's always best to adjust any manual formatting to the table of contents as a last step.

Tips for using the Table of Contents block

The table of contents block isn’t limited to templated content inside of section title or title blocks. If you’ve created a section of your email manually, you can include any string of text in your table of contents by manually setting its paragraph style:

Any text with a Paragraph style of Header 1, Header 2, or Header 3 will be included in the table of contents that is generated.

 

Other tips and best practices:

  • Don’t forget to refresh the table of contents block if you’ve made changes to your headers.
  • If you'd like to remove a heading from the table of contents, it's easiest to generate the full table of contents and remove any links using the in-line editor in the table of contents after.
  • When using the list-style (vertical) table of contents, it is usually best to leave the content left-aligned (rather than centered).
  • Section title and article titles will automatically be included in the table of contents, as long as they have been updated to read anything besides the default, placeholder text (anything other than ‘section title’ or ‘title’).

 

Compatibility with recipients’ email clients

The table of contents block is compatible with most email clients recipients may be using (including Outlook and Gmail). Recipients on mobile email clients (like the ones built in to Apple's iOS and Android) will still see the table of contents block, but the links inside the table of contents won’t be clickable.

Similarly to mobile email clients, there are exceptions for other, less common desktop email clients which cannot handle anchor tags (the HTML tag used to jump to the content linked below using a table of contents block).

In any case of recipients using an unsupported client, each recipient will still see the table of contents block, but the links inside the table of contents won’t be clickable.
