Some users may have noticed opens coming from Mountain View, CA over the last few days. It seems that Gmail has made some changes related to how they load images in messages, downloading them to their server as opposed to having the browser access them. This is similar to the way Outlook.com handles images.
At the moment it seems to only be affecting a small number of users, but may increase as Google pushes the change to more users.
What this means for you...
- Opens still mean that the email was opened, however the location information may show Mountain View, CA. Since Google is accessing the image the location information will likely reflect their location.
- Re-opening sent items may cause an open since the methods used to block those opens are likely being circumvented.
We're actively looking into this and investigating the best way to deal with some of the changes.
